UK: Good weather boosts avocado demand and prices

Warm weather, BBQs and lots of alfresco dining has boosted avocado sales in the UK in recent weeks. Strong demand has been experienced even though raw material prices have been higher than at this time last year.

"There are a few countries supplying the UK market at the moment," said Mark Everett from Worldwidefruit. "Peru will be the main origin of supply to the UK and Europe at this time but good volumes are also being shipped from Peru to the US market where until recently prices have remained strong. Rain and floods which devastated parts of country and infrastructure made for a delayed start to the season for Peru. But they have caught up without creating a big influx of Peruvian fruit on the market, although prices did dip for a couple of weeks the market managed to absorb these volumes without too much impact."

South Africa estimated 12.5 million cartons this year and seem to living up that estimate, although sizes are tending to be larger but the quality is good.

Kenya, Mexico and Colombia are also supplying some volumes into the UK.

"The demand is still very strong with UK consumers, especially with the record temperatures we have seen in the last weeks.”
