Spain: Yellow melon, without significant competitors in the international market
This variety is mainly consumed in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, France or Switzerland, with Spain being only a producer. "We can deliver between a million and a half and two million kilos per campaign," states Alejandro Ruiz, of Frutas y Verduras Joanru. "There may be other countries with similar climates also producing this melon variety, although I don't know for sure," affirms the representative of Joanru. "In any case, Spain is currently the only country exporting yellow melons to Europe."
The Spanish producer and marketer has been cultivating this melon variety for ten years and, with time, it has come to the conclusion that the demand for it relies fully on the weather. "When it is hot, there is more demand, and this has an impact on prices, which go up and down," explains Ruiz. The campaign kicked off with a price of 11 Euro per box (12 kilos); a little more than last year, and right now they are selling the fruit for 8 Euro per box.
