Beginning of the sweet cherry harvest - low volumes expected

This spring's frost during blossoming caused one of the lowest yields of sweet cherries of recent years in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. "In both states, we're expecting a yield of 1250 tons overall," said the CEO of the state association "Sächsisches Obst", Udo Jentzsch, at the opening of the season 2017 in Jessen (county of Wittenberg), on Thursday.

Last year, 2120 tons of the red fruit were harvested. The association represents the interests of fruit growers in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt.

According to this data, Saxony-Anhalt will harvest 700 tons, 60% less than last year. The fruit is cultivated by 36 large businesses in the Southern part of the state. The production area amounts to 187 hectares in the region of Naumburg and at the Süßer Lake.

In Saxony, 20 companies are cultivating sweet cherries on 138 hectares. There, the producers are expecting 550 tons. The main cultivation region is the Elbtal.
