Germany: Apples threatened by sunburn

After the damage done by frost during flowering, the apple harvests are now also endangered by sunburn, said the deputy CEO of the provincial society of Rhein fruit and vegetable producers, Peter Muß, on Tuesday. "The sun-facing side of the apples will turn brown and rotten," is how he describes the phenomenon of sunburn in apples.

So far it is not visible though. If there are more heat waves in the next couple of months, then the danger of losses for producers may be imminent.

Already now the costs for the producers are high, since plants have to be irrigated more thoroughly. The consumers usually do not notice any of that. "Those are the extra costs that farmers have to take on themselves," explains Muß.
