Nebraska delegation to visit Canada to gauge NAFTA sentiments

A delegation from Nebraska will visit Canada in August amid recent talks of the President ripping up the trade agreement.

The August trade mission to the No. 1 destination for Nebraskan exports aims to gauge the sentiment of Canadian leaders about potential changes to NAFTA, Governor Pete Ricketts said Tuesday.

The visit to the state’s top trading partner will make its first stop in Toronto before moving northeast to the capital city of Ottawa, where the governor and other officials from state agencies like the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Economic Development will meet with Canadian legislative counterparts.

Greg Ibach, director of the State Ag Department, said the allure of far-away export destinations like Japan and Hong Kong can distract from the importance of stalwarts like Canada and Mexico, the two other parties to NAFTA.
