Armenian prime minister orders hail damage estimation

Karen Karapetyan, Armenian prime minister, at today’s regular Cabinet session, instructed appropriate officials to gauge the damage the recent hail and thunderstorms have inflicted to the nine villages of the country’s Armavir province.

In his words, showers and hail have struck hard at farms in the province.

“It is necessary to gauge the damage and submit appropriate proposals to the government,” he said.

Ignati Araqelyan, agriculture minister, told journalists after the session that the damage estimation process is already under way.

”Hail and frost are not extraordinary phenomena for Armenia, and the government will provide as much financial assistance as it can,” Araqelyan said.

Farmers’ loans, he said, will be considered to freeze bank interests and provide grace periods and tax adjournments to the borrowers.

The minister stressed that the government can’t afford to provide full compensations for the entire damage – for that it is necessary to introduce an agriculture insurance institution in the country.
