Mexico: Jalisco's working to get its avocado back into the US

The Association of Avocado Exporting Producers from Jalisco (APEAJAL) continues to work so that their avocados can enter the United States, after their entry was overturned days before Donald Trump assumed the presidency, stated Miguel Luis Juan, the man in charge of Commercial Promotion at Apeajal.

APEAJAL was present in this city, in the framework of the VIII Avocado Nutrition Course that is being celebrated from June 8 to 10 in this city.

Miguel Luis stated that the V Latin American Avocado Congress 2017 (VCLA2017), would be held from September 4 to 7 in Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco, which is that entity's biggest producer of avocados, as it produces between 15 to 23 tons per hectare and officially has 17 thousand hectares planted.

He said Ciudad Guzmán, which is also known as Zapotlan, "is one of the most important cities in the state of Jalisco because of its Industrial, agricultural, commercial, cultural, and tourist development. The city, which is mainly devoted to agriculture and livestock, also has a large university population, which is why it also has travel and accommodation facilities, as well as cultural and entertainment centers.

He said that the Organizing Committee was working hard to prepare "a quality academic and visiting program, according to the needs of the avocado industry, that takes into account some of the most important aspects of this noble product."

About 1,000 participants from the productive, academic, industrial and business sectors will attend this meeting. The academic program includes plenary lectures, oral presentations, and poster presentations, under 5 main thematic axes.

"Each theme will be developed by experts with an outstanding track record, that have committed to attend the event and share their knowledge."

He said that the "Congress represents an opportunity to strengthen ties of friendship and strengthen the region of Latin America, by providing new knowledge and relationships that bring quality fruits to consumers around the world."

He also said that Jalisco, the second producer of avocado, after Michoacan, had officially recognized 17 thousand hectares; but that the association estimated there were more than 22 thousand hectares devoted to this crop in Jalisco. In turn, the presidents of the Local Boards of Plant Health, technicians and engineers estimate that there are more than 25,000 hectares devoted to this crop, as there are many new plantations that have not been registered, which is necessitating a reorganization of the industry."
