Ventura County, CA approves program to aid and recruit farmworkers

County supervisors in Ventura County, California narrowly approved a program Tuesday to aid and recruit farmworkers, a vote cheered by labor but dividing agricultural interests.

Voting 3-2 after a heated discussion that lasted more than two hours, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors OK'd what's being called the Farmworker Resource Program. Up to $200,000 would be devoted to the effort in the next fiscal year.

Strawberry harvester Jorge Toledano, of Oxnard, saw the chance to reach common ground with growers.

"They need us and we need them," he told the board. "We're asking for what we deserve as human beings."

The objectives are to build trust, promote the county as a place to work, inform farmworkers about labor protections and assist them in navigating public agencies. Staff members would also try to help laborers resolve workplace problems.
