Agriculture training organization brightens AU mothers' prospects in agriculture

Crystal Cranshaw used the skills she gained in an agricultural training course to go with her husband to the bank and get a loan. She had prepared a bank loan as part of her course and it proved a good grounding for her.

Fellow student Heather Aikinson feels she is in a better position to help grow her family's Feilding business after attending the same course. The duo have only just graduated from a diploma in agribusiness delivered in Manawatu by the Primary Industry Training Organisation (Primary ITO).

The training organisation, subsidised by industry and the Government, offers qualifications and short courses for people working in agriculture. Courses cover 30 primary industries such as dairy processing, equine, horticulture and meat processing. Both Atkinson and Cranshaw say the course has given them confidence to excel in their work.

"Before I did this course we would not have even entered. What we achieved was a direct result of what I learned through the diploma," Cranshaw says. "It gave me so much more insight into the farm and the people you meet are great. The course has been very good and gives you so much confidence. And we liked the human relations (HR) part of the course, it was awesome. In Wairarapa there are four full timers and HR is essential."

"The courses that make up the diploma provide an in-depth understanding of the core elements and functions required to run a successful business, whether it's learning to talk budgets like a bank manager, how to set goals today and reach them tomorrow, or how to grow a team that will grow the business," training adviser for Manawatu/Rangitikei Agriculture, Martin Orange said.
