Shanghai import market

China: Spanish & US oranges enter market; cherries see fast sales

This week, citrus fruits are the stars in the market of imported fruits, and the varieties have increased with the arrival of Valencia oranges from Spain and the U.S., providing consumers with more options. Such a change has also resulted in fluctuations in the market performance of citrus products. Similar fluctuations also happened to American cherries, which are at an early stage of sales. Even though the price differences between various qualities are widening further, the overall sales are still going smoothly thanks to great market demand.

The supply of Lane late oranges is approaching the end, and the first container of Valencia oranges from Spain has arrived in Shanghai. With their hard texture, the overall quality is good except for the problem of rough skin, which has affected the sales. Oranges from the U.S. have also arrived this week, but they taste relatively sour. In the meantime, under pressure from Egyptian oranges which are available in large volumes, the prices of Spanish and American oranges are lower and the sales are going slowly as well. The prices of American oranges (size 88) ranges between 270 and 280 yuan per box (20kg) this week and the demand is small. The prices of Egyptian ones are around 130 and 140 yuan, with the price differences getting bigger based on varied quality. The quality ones are sold at 150 yuan while some others are selling slowly even with a lower price of 130 yuan.

Compared to the fast sales of oranges, the performance of imported lemons has been dissatisfying. Affected by the good quality and ample supply of domestic lemons, the sales of imported ones from South Africa and Taiwan are going very slowly despite the huge demand for them in summer. The prices of these lemons are not really high. South African ones in size 113, for instance, are sold at prices between 280 and 290 per box of 20kg.

Considering the import cost, such prices are relatively low, but they are still difficult to sell.

American cherries, which have just entered their season, are selling well because the prices went down slightly last week. Variety wise, this week the supply of Brooks decreased and Coral became the major seller in the market, the prices of which are between 580 and 630 for those of medium quality and 650 and 700 for those of good quality. As a rare variety, Rainier remains a pricy choice, even though its prices have gone down this week. By the end of this week, Rainier cherries are still sold at prices ranging from 750 and 800 yuan. This week, the 16-pound packages of cherries are available with 8 individual boxes inside, which became very popular on the major e-commerce platforms.
