New Hamilton Airport, AU packaging plant to boost export capacity

Seventy-five high-tech jobs will be created in the Waikato with the construction of a corrugated packaging plant at Hamilton Airport. Visy Board New Zealand is behind the $100 million factory, which is to be established on an 8.5-hectare site at the airport.

"Robots is the wrong thing to say, but everything is computer-controlled and very technically advanced," Visy Board NZ general manager Andrew Gleason said. "We're creating 75 jobs that will require a skilled workforce, which we expect to recruit from the local area and train ourselves.

A lot of the roles will be to ensure the technical equipment on-site is operated properly, Gleason said. Visy Board NZ already has a factory in Auckland, but a growing customer base caused that factory to reach capacity early.

"Export supply chains associated with food processing, fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products are all doing very well and we're benefiting from that growth. Another factory means we can expand and further the market for many years to come."

Construction of the new factory began in April and is due to be completed early in 2018.
