Illinois, US wholesaler sees opportunity in local produce

Darnell Lee has some big numbers behind his new produce shop in O’Fallon. With help from the Illinois Metro East Small Business Development Center in East St. Louis, he’s opened his new retail store on a stretch of Illinois 50, where 45,000 to 50,000 vehicles a day pass by.

Add to that his 30 years experience in the wholesale produce business and nine years as a three-booth vendor at the famous Soulard Market in St. Louis and he believes he has a winning business plan.

“We don’t have our Illinois or Missouri produce yet because it’s too early yet. But it will be piling in soon,” Lee said.

Anyone walking into the door at Lee’s store will be greeted by what’s in season, whether it’s the sweet aroma of apples or the herbaceous scent of leafy greens.

There also are all kinds of fruit in the lemons, limes, pineapples, oranges, watermelon, grapes and local berries, as well as potatoes, onions, lettuce, kale, sweet potatoes, peppers, sweet corn and other vegetables. There’s whole giant table top devoted to tomatoes only.
