Richard Uijtdewillegen, Aartsenfruit:

“Dutch market increasingly looking for flavourful melons”

The Spanish melon season has been tricky up till now. “This was caused by the disappointing weather of recent weeks, and moreover, besides Spanish, we’ve also had volumes from overseas on the market,” explains Richard Uijtdewilligen, responsible for Spanish import at Aartsenfruit. “For the continuation of good prices in melons we need at least two weeks of good weather, and not for just one day as we had in recent weeks.”

“Quality from Amería, which had high temperatures, was good in general. Now the weather is better here, and there’s a bit more demand for melons on the market. Quality isn’t the best yet. In Murcia, people are now slowly starting covered cultivation, but volumes from this region won’t start coming for a few weeks,” Richard says. “As of this year, we also have yellow and Piel de Sapo melons from production areas in Murcia under our own brand UNO. This completes our UNO assortment.”

One trend is that the Dutch market is also increasingly interested in flavourful melons, according to the importer. “Every year, we sell more and more Piel de Sapo melons, which is very normal in southern countries. Seedless melons that are flavourful include watermelons. With Fashion, Aartsenfruit has a great trump, and we market it exclusively in the Benelux.”
