Bangladesh issues 'self-imposed ban' on veg exports to EU

Bangladesh has imposed a 'self-ban' on vegetable exports to the European Union (EU) market, encouraging local growers to correct themselves following Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), reports UNB.

The government has adopted the strategy to avert 'any possible ban' being imposed by the EU, from where Bangladesh has been receiving objections for the last few years over the quality of Bangladeshi vegetables and fruits.

Meanwhile, the government has introduced 'contract farming' for local growers who will be allowed to export to the EU market maintaining the required quality. Officials at the commerce ministry and agriculture ministry confirmed the news agency about the self-imposed ban.

"Those maintaining GAP won't face any problem. Many are reportedly exporting vegetables through producing fake Phytosanitary certificates. Such practices bring more harm than benefits," commerce secretary (in-charge) Subhashish Bose told the news agency.

"We want to export quality products. Nobody wants to see the door of an entire market closing because of a handful of people who are forging documents or their products," said the commerce secretary.
