Japan imported 131k tons of vegetables from China in April

Japan imported commodities worth 1.43 trillion yen from China in April, with medical products, telephone handsets and vegetables among the largest categories of imports, according to the ministry. They reported that Japan had imported 131,697 tons of vegetables from China.

Total Japanese exports to China soared 14.8 percent year-on-year to $10.65 billion in April, with medical products, plastics, automotive parts and nonferrous metals constituting the largest categories, data from Japan's finance ministry showed on Monday. Japan's total exports grew for a fifth straight month in April, rising 7.5 percent year-on-year to 6.3 trillion yen, ministry data showed.

"The figure indicates that China's economy is gradually recovering, and if the trend continues, Chinese demand for commodities from Japan will further expand. Meanwhile, more investment in China will also drive Japanese exports," Zhang Jifeng, a researcher with the Institute of Japanese Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said.

China has been Japan's largest trading partner in the past two years. Although bilateral trade has been affected by some conflicts, China is still the East Asian country's second-largest trading partner this year, following the US, Zhang told the Global Times.
