Potato variety Kennebec is a well-known mid-early to late variety in southern countries. It’s a white-fleshed variety and is used for chips year-round. In the future, it could be replaced by a new variety. “Divaa is a new variety. It looks better, is stronger and has higher yields,” says Francis Binst from Binst Breeding & Selection.

For this variety, they work with Scottish Caithness Potatoes, a company that recently opened a branch in the Netherlands. “Caithness has distributors in multiple countries, and we focus on Belgium, Italy, and in future on the Balkan, with Divaa. It’s a wonderful alternative for Kennebec, and it’s expected that the latter will be grown less and less in coming years. The market is evolving, and is looking for better, stronger and more beautiful varieties with both good intrinsic characteristics and a good presentation. Divaa’s shape and bright skin are very attractive.”
