Very promising strawberry varieties from Italian-Spanish firm

The 34th edition of the Italian fair Macfrut, held in Rimini from 10 to 12 May, has been practically devoted exclusively to strawberries. During the three days of the event, there have been many technical talks and exhibitions about the fruit, which is why Macfrut 2017 has become a key event for all those interested in this product.

Nova Siri Genetics was invited to participate in various technical meetings. Nicola Tufaro, a geneticist at this young Italo-Spanish company, presented its varietal program in the workshop organised by L'Informatore Agrario under the title "Strawberries: the most promising varieties", where it was concluded that Nova Siri Genetics varieties have gained a strong foothold in the Italian market in just two years, mostly due to the excellent results in the field and the quality of the fruits, which stand out for their sweet and intense flavour.

Melissa, Marisol, Charlene and Margherita, which are varieties of Nova Siri Genetics, were also featured during "Strawberry Talks", a series of conferences organised to raise awareness of new advances in strawberry research, production, distribution and consumption. Once again, the breeder Nicola Tufaro presented the varietal program, featuring varieties that are sure to replace others that had so far been cultivated with some success in Italy and other Mediterranean countries, like Spain and Morocco. Their secret: quality, productivity, rusticity and a lot of flavour.

Macfrut 2017 has reaffirmed the tremendous success of these new varieties and the company has already announced that it will not be able to meet all the demand that has been generated for the next campaign and is planning to substantially expand its nurseries to be able to supply all the orders as soon as possible. Of the Melissa variety, which is operating exceptionally well in southern Italy and in various Mediterranean areas, tests are being carried out with a frigo plant with very good results for colder areas.

The Marisol, Charlene or Melissa are demanded by large marketers which want them exclusively and sell them as a premium product; this is the case of the Marisol in the United Kingdom. Moreover, they are vigorous and tolerant varieties and, therefore, very appropriate and advised for organic cultivation; an option more and more demanded by consumers.

The organizers of the 9th International Strawberry Symposium, to be held in Rimini in May 2020, have also relied on Nova Siri Genetics to be one of the host companies during this event, which will be attended by technicians and strawberry professionals from all over the world.
