New Jersey fruit-packing plant burns down, “It's a total loss”

A late-night fire destroyed a fruit-packing and storage warehouse Thursday night in Hammonton, New Jersey, as firefighters remained on the scene Friday streaming water on the still-smoking wreckage.

Hammonton Fire Chief Bill Eppler said the cause is under investigation. He reported no injuries.

The size of the building, which included a huge warehouse, offices and apartments, brought fire companies from neighboring counties to assist, Eppler said. “It’s a total loss,” he said.

The business, located at 205 Pine Road, has more than 40,000 square feet of cold storage, freezer and repacking space and expanded recently, according to its website.
