The port of Shekou lies on the eastern bank of the Pearl River's estuary, in the southern part of Shenzhen's special economic district, and close to the economic hinterland of the Pearl River Delta. The port currently has 18 large berths, with 9 berths especially for barges. Every year more than 10 million containers come in and out of the port.

In the past the main kinds of fruit that passed through here were dragon fruit, bananas, apples, grapes and coconuts.
