Opportunities for South-China special districts to import fresh agricultural products

The Shekou container wharf limited company and the Shekou port are companies in which a controlling numbers of shares are owned by investors from the largest common wharf operators in China. After more than twenty years of development they have already become a flagship for these investors.

The port of Shekou lies on the eastern bank of the Pearl River's estuary, in the southern part of Shenzhen's special economic district, and close to the economic hinterland of the Pearl River Delta. It is the main international hub for developing trade and logistics between China and the rest of the world in the Pearl River Delta and all the regions of southern China. The port currently has 18 large berths, with 9 berths especially for barges. Every year more than 10 million containers come in and out of the port.

"We have sufficient shipping routes to transport fresh fruit and vegetables. In China, every port in the Pearl River Delta can be reached from the river, which is extremely convenient. Our location in the Pearl River Delta is very advantageous to carry out our shipping of containers. As far as international shipping routes are concerned, Shekou port currently has a weekly amount of 145 international cargo ships coming and going to Asia, Africa and Latin America, Europe and America, the Mediterrannean Sea, Australia and other regions.

The most important ports for exports of fruits and vegetables can also be reached, for example those in Vietnam, the Phillipines, New Zealand, Chile and Ecuador. Furthermore, our efficiency in loading and unloading, our storing operations and port services, have all received positive evaluations from clients who collaborated with us. At this time, our fruit imports are tested and reported beforehand, which means that goods can be declared even without having arrived at the port. This saves a lot of time otherwise spent on clearing the customs. In general we need 2 or 3 days to complete this task, but sometimes we can even finish it on the very same day.

In the past the main kinds of fruit that passed through here were dragon fruit, bananas, apples, grapes and coconuts. In 2016 the total amount of fruit imports exceeded 20 000 TEU containers, which makes us the major port for fruit imports in the south-China regions," says mister Li from the Shekou Container Wharf Limited Company.
