Kees Oskam:

"Pear sales are steady, apple market slightly slow"

Dutch top fruit is nearing the end of the season. "I expect the pear supply to be big enough to make it to the end of July. With apples the Elstar is expected to be done by mid July, but I expect varieties such as Jonagold, Jonagored and Red Prince to be able to switch seamlessly into the new season," says Kees Oskam of Handelmaatschappij Jan Oskam from Vleuten.

"The pear sales are steady with a wide demand throughout Europe. I find the apple market slightly lazy. The only varieties selling well here are the Elstar and Boskoop. The sales of the Jonagold group are more difficult under the pressure of the Polish supply." When asked whether he expects development in the prices, the fruit trader responds: "Elstar and Boskoop might go up in price a little. I wouldn't rule this out for pears either, but I don't think there is going to be a rush. A relatively large volume of imported top fruit has arrived and there will also soon be a large volume of summer fruit on the market, which will attract people's attention."

"It hasn't been a bad top fruit season so far, but it is the quality and size sorting that decide this and determine the average price. The price has been very slim for the smaller sizes of apples and pears. Thankfully there has been trade throughout the season, although in certain weeks we would have preferred a few trucks more. We still have two months and then we'll know what will happen in the new season. There is already plenty of speculation on this, but it's all guesswork. We have had a lot of cold weather and we had to irrigate last night. We need a few degrees higher for good growing weather," concludes Kees.
