Moldova: Price increases in agriculture not as bad as expected
In an interview for Sputnik, Mr Viorel Chivriga, an expert in the field of agriculture, commented on how quickly Moldova would recover after the April snowfalls.
Snow in late April caught Moldovan agricultural producers by surprise. On every channel, TV stories reported severe damages to young plantations, broken tree branches, damaged flowers, etc. However, as it turned out, the damage caused by the weather was exaggerated.
According to Mr Chivriga, stonefruit trees suffered the most, as well as nuts in some places, while the plantations of rapeseed were practically destroyed; however, it is premature to say that prices for fruits and vegetables will skyrocket.
"The fact is that the trees won't bloom for another two or three days, so the flowers were not completely destroyed." Yes, snowfall reduced the production to a certain extent, but not completely," he explained.
What is true, however, is that there will be substantially more quality issues, since the number of harmful insects is likely to increase due to abundant rainfall in Moldova. At the same time, however, according to the expert, the country will not experience an acute shortage of fresh fruits and vegetables.
"Of course, some dealers will try to take advantage of the situation, and prices will probably rise, but I don't think they will double or triple." My forecast is that they will increase by between 5 and 10 percent," concluded Mr Chivriga.
