Almost 3 Euro per kilo for the first apricots

"Spain: "Murcia will produce 30% more stonefruit than last year"

The profitability of this product, the expansion of the acreage and the good weather conditions recorded in the coastal area of Murcia have meant that the total volume that is expected to be harvested will be 30% greater than last year. "We have not been affected by the cold of recent days, mainly because we are in the lower area of Murcia and here the fruit had already grown to a large size," explains José Antonio Herrera Luque, manager of Fruits Hortomarket.

As regards peaches, nectarines and apricots, which are the products sold by Fruits Hortomarket, the earliest varieties are already being harvested and these have not experienced a volume increase as significant as the one we'll see in other varieties. That is why prices won't be affected at the start of the campaign. "The small sizes of nectarines and peaches cost between 1.50 and 1.60 Euro, while the larger, higher quality ones stands at 2.20 Euro," states Herrera. Meanwhile, the price of apricots is a little higher because the campaign is just in its first week, reaching "almost 3 Euro per kilo."

90% of the nectarines, apricots and peaches sold by this company go to countries like Germany, which offers continuity in its purchases from the beginning to the end of the campaign; Poland, which is more unstable but pays a good price; and Romania, which accepts the smallest calibres.
