"Jan Ham, Holland Potatoes: "New harvest within the near future"

Dutch fresh market potatoes in transition

Under the smoke of Schiphol airport, in the middle of the Randstad, lies Holland Potatoes. This farm and potato sorting business is owned by brothers, Jan and Ban Ham. Here, anything potato-related is traded on a daily basis. "Because of our location between the big cities, the fresh produce market is our biggest market. Increasingly, local and regional traders are becoming aware of us and we can react quickly to meet their needs. Besides potatoes, we also offers a diverse range of packaged onions," says Jan Ham.

At the moment, the first freshly harvested potatoes are receiving special attention. "The well-known Galatina baby potatoes are here again. They pair well with asparagus. In addition, we also have plenty of Malta's (Alpha), newly harvested and of perfect quality", says Jan. "Another very popular product we provide is the coarse Agria, destined for the catering industry. These are distributed, washed and unwashed, in 20 kg packs. Our Agrias helped win the 2017 AD chip test."

It was difficult to maintain a steady supply of good quality potatoes this last season. Prices are still consistently high and, going into the new financial year, there is still an imbalance between a reasonably constant demand and low supply. "In terms of the fresh market, we are in a phase of transition. The suppliers of the old harvests' days are numbered. Within the foreseeable future, there will be a new harvest ready to be snatched up," says Jan.

"The chip sector is different. We will have to make do with the old harvest for the time being. There is no indication that the supply will not be fulfilled before it's time for the new harvest. In short, it was a very good year in terms of prices and we had a reasonable amounts of sales. People are welcome to visit our warehouse to have a look at our products and to discuss opportunities for the future," concludes Jan.
