Perdue officially confirmed as US Agriculture Secretary

With a final vote of 87-11, Sonny Perdue has officially become the new Agriculture Secretary. His cousin, Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., voted “present” and presided over the vote.

“As secretary, I will champion the concerns of farmers, ranchers, foresters and producers, and will work tirelessly to solve the issues facing our farm families,” Perdue said in an address to USDA employees Tuesday morning. “I am proud to have been given this opportunity and look forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work as we continue to move the USDA and our nation forward.”

NPR’s Geoff Bennett reported on Perdue's appointment, his support and his action plan as the new Agriculture Secretary saying:

“His most immediate priority will be working with Congress to formulate a new farm bill. The giant five-year measure covers a range of policies from crop insurance for farmers to nutrition programs for low-income Americans.

“Perdue has the support of agriculture groups and lawmakers from farm states who say he can represent the interests of farmers in a Trump administration dominated by wealthy business executives.”

With Perdue’s confirmation, the last two Trump cabinet-level nominees awaiting Senate confirmation are Alexander Acosta for labor secretary and Robert Lighthizer for U.S. trade representative.
