Romania: Cold weather takes a toll on fruit and veg production
The cold weather recorded in Romania will affect the already blooming fruit trees, and the fruit production will be much lower, according to researchers from the Research Station for Vegetable Growing Buzau, cited by News.ro. At the same time, they argue that low harvests will lead to rising prices.
Thus, according to the researcher, Costel Vanatoru, all plants have suffered from this cold season, but "by far" the most affected will be blooming fruit trees, especially cherries and apricots, but also peaches and even plums.
The quoted source added that vegetable growers are experiencing a difficult time because of the cold; some of them are unable to grow plants even in greenhouses and solariums, and this means that the harvest period could also be delayed. The experts at the Research Station are already talking about a two-week delay. Most importantly, however, is the fact that these sudden temperature changes favour the appearance of diseases and pests.
According to the same source, if harvests are poor, as expected, we can expect higher prices for both fruits and vegetables.
