China: Fruit Day flies in first batch of Peruvian 'Big Mac' avocados

Avocados have been called the champion of the fruit world over the last few years. Because of their rich nutritional components and value in the kitchen, the demand for avocados is growing worldwide. The Chinese market is no exception of course. According to the official data of Fruit Day, the yearly sales figures of avocados have quadrupled every year since 2010. An increasing number of Chinese consumers have made avocados a part of their daily diet, so the demand for avocados also becomes a daily given.

But April brings an annual supply break. The season for Chilean avocados ends in March, and the Mexican avocados are all diverted to the American market in April. So in order to fill the void in this period and to satisfy the demands of consumers, Fruit Day has flown in a first batch of Peruvian 'Big Mac' avocados for the Chinese market.

As the Director of Purchasing at Fruit Day explains, "the weight of individual Peruvian Big Mac avocados is around 180 grams to 220 grams. This means they are 30% heavier than the average avocado. At present, the first batch of Big Mac avocados imported by air are already being sold by Fruit Day. This is the first time since the official market access permission last year for Peruvian avocados that this variety has arrived in China."

When asked what the actual difference is between Peruvian avocados and Mexican or Chilean avocados, the Director of Purchasing answers the following. "The difference between the products of these countries is actually not that big. The main difference can be found in the timing of the production season. The production season of Peruvian avocados is from April to September. That of Chilean avocados lasts from October until March. Mexican avocados have a longer production season and they can supply the market almost the whole year round, but Mexico exports almost all of its avocados to the American market. For that reason, the Peruvian avocados are the perfect fit to fill the market supply gap. And what's more, the Big Mac avocados we imported this time have further diversified the variety of avocados. They present a new choice to Chinese consumers."

Fruit Day was established in 2009. It is a leading Chinese fresh produce retail enterprise that follows a new model. Products are bought straight from the fields and brought directly to the consumer. The company has its own cold storage facilities and a cold logistics chain. It can efficiently deliver at home the whole year through. With an online APP and an offline store, diversified sales channels fulfil all the needs of clients. Up to June 2016, the Fruit Day online app had over 10 million users and provided services in 86 cities. The story of the avocados is only one of many innovative actions by Fruit Day. In reality, many popular imported fruits on the Chinese market were delivered by Fruit Day. Some examples are the novelty, sanguine oranges, Zespri Big Mac kiwis, American Ruby cheries, Tasmanian cherries, Australian honey oranges and many others.
