Spain is Poland’s biggest fruit and veg supplier
According to Eurostat data, in 2016, Poland imported a total of 1,961,092 tonnes of fruit and vegetables, of which 1,675,806 tonnes were purchased from other EU Member States and 285,286 tonnes from third countries. By comparison, in 2015, the country imported 1,990,013 tonnes of fruit and vegetables (1 percent more), reports FAMMU/FAPA.
The Polish market's largest suppliers are Spain, with 523,700 tonnes, the Netherlands, with 379 thousand tonnes, and Germany, with a little less than 230 thousand tonnes.
Also, over 209 thousand tonnes were imported from Italy, 116.8 thousand tonnes from Ecuador, and slightly over 93 thousand tonnes were purchased from Belgium.
Fruit imports were dominated by bananas, with purchases totalling 304.7 thousand tonnes. Next in terms of volume were oranges, with 157.6 thousand tonnes, and mandarins, with 140.5 thousand tonnes.
Other important products were tomatoes, with 142.2 thousand tonnes, watermelons (131.3 thousand tonnes), lemons (slightly under 100 thousand tonnes), grapes (95.2 thousand tonnes), onions (55.3 thousand tonnes), nectarines (52.4 thousand tonnes) and grapefruits, cucumbers and sweet peppers (about 52,000 tonnes).
