New York State tax credit encourages farmers to donate to food banks

A new tax credit is looking to help boost produce donations to New York State food banks from farms. The tax credit, which has a limit of $5,000, is hoped to give extra incentives to farmers to donate. One farmer, Peter Russell is finally getting something back after donating to local food banks for years.

The particular produce being packaged by Russel Farms won't make a profit for the fruit and vegetable farmer but instead the cabbage is being donated to the Food Bank of Western New York.

“We want to do our part to get fruits and vegetables locally grown to as many people as possible,” said Peter Russell of Russell Farms.

The food bank hopes the new tax credit will help fight food waste and the credit couldn't have come at a better time with demands for food ever growing.
