Mandatory origin labelling on fresh produce one step closer in NZ

Compulsory country of origin labeling on fruit and vegetables may be one step closer to reality in New Zealand, after the government made a U-turn on their previous decision.

The bill has now won the initial backing of the government. The government had previously opposed Green MP Steffan Browning’s member's bill on the issue.

However Prime Minister Bill English says the government’s changed its view on the bill following a discussion in caucus. The U-turn means it will now support the bill through to Select Committee for consideration.
