Turkish fruit and veg prices could fall sharply in Ukraine

A sharp reduction in the price of Turkish vegetables and fruits in Ukraine may occur due to a new aggravation of relations between Russia and Turkey, as predicted by the General Director of the Ukrainian Retail Trade Suppliers Association, Alexei Doroshenko.

"Last night it was announced that Russian air carriers received a message about the possible introduction of a new ban on charter flights to Turkey," said Alexei Doroshenko on his Facebook page.

It should be noted that the Russian Federation had already introduced a ban on the import of Turkish fruits and vegetables after Turkey shot down the Russian Su-24 in Syria. Consequently, economic relations between the two countries were curtailed, including an embargo on fruits and vegetables from Istanbul.

For Ukrainian consumers, these sanctions resulted in up to 20-30% discounts in the price of imported fruits and vegetables.

"Now the situation is repeated because of political differences in Syria. And if there is a crisis in the relationship again, we will most likely see a reduction in the price of the whole assortment of Turkish horticultural exports in Ukraine, which includes oranges, mandarins, lemons, grapefruits, grapes, pomegranates, courgettes, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, peaches, nectarines, apricots, sweet cherries and pears," stated Doroshenko.
