Italy: Apple situation changed in March

"In terms of quality, 2016 was far better than the previous year. Apples have a good quality and compactness, which is essential to tackle the next few months. After a slow January and February, the market changed in March and sales were exceptional," explains Gerhard Dichgans, director of VOG.

Gerhard Dichgans, director of VOG, at Fruit Logistica 2017.

"Thanks to the increase in quotations, we can guarantee a good price to our producers. Royal Gala did really well after a disappointing 2015/16 - it reconquered the trust of clients thanks to quality. The sales of Fuji were also good, with quotations increasing in March due to the lower volumes available. Unfortunately, Golden apples haven't performed so well for the second year in a row, as they are paying the price of the closing of export markets such as Egypt and Maghreb."

Mediterranean destinations, Maghreb and Egypt in particular, were the outlet for Italian apples during the first two years following the enforcement of the Russian ban. "But exports stopped in the summer of 2016 with negative repercussions especially for Golden and Red Delicious. Demand has slowly started to rise again in February, but we are still far from the levels of 2015. Now it seems Algeria wants to start importing apples once again. It would be preferable for a good end of the campaign."

Over the past few years, VOG has focused on new outlet markets such as India and South America. "Bilateral agreements between Italy and some countries in south-east Asia such as Thailand and Vietnam are crucial to close phytosanitary dossiers and start exporting."
