Pedro Santa Cecilia, of Kiwi Natur:

"We don't know any other company that sells kiwis on the vine"

Kiwis on the vine are back on the market for the second year after the success achieved by Kiwi Natur in their pioneering launch last campaign.

"We have no record of any other company that markets kiwis like this," explains Pedro Santa Cecilia, of Kiwi Natur's commercial department.

According to the salesman, this product is not only innovative in its presentation, with its exclusively designed tray: "While conventional kiwis are harvested in bulk, those on the vine are cut manually and with the utmost care from trees that are over 30 years old. Kiwis on the vine preserve their nutritional properties for longer by extending their cycle. It also takes longer for the fruit to ripen and they can be kept for longer in chambers," he affirms.

Given that the entire production process is carried out manually, it is a product designed for a gourmet market or high-end supermarkets. "Pickers need a special training, since it is necessary at all times to ensure that the fruit does not separate from the branch," points out Pedro Santa Cecilia. "For this format, we select only those branches whose kiwis are large and their appearance is unbeatable."

Kiwis on the vine are starting to be introduced in several Spanish markets and are also finding their way to export destinations in Europe, where they "are achieving an even greater success," according to the salesman.

"We have two great customers in Europe who are starting to rely on this product. It is still a very new and exclusive product, so it will grow little by little. We are receiving many calls from people interested in it."

The plantations of Kiwi Natur are located in the region of Bajo Nalón, Asturias, whose valleys are characterised by their fertility and excellent conditions for the cultivation of kiwis. The mountains surrounding the plantations protect them from the most extreme weather conditions and the proximity to the sea ensures mild temperatures.

The kiwis on the vine can be supplied from January until the end of June. "With rising temperatures, the demand for kiwis increases, and at the moment the available supply is starting to fall, so we expect this to positively influence our sales," states Pedro Santa Cecilia.
