Gale destroys over 10,000 banana trees in India

Farmers of Gopalasamudram, Thiruvenkatanathapuram, Karunkadu and Kondanagaram have been cultivating bananas with the water available from wells. After water levels in the wells went down, the farmers saved the standing banana crop with water pumped from the Tamirabarani.

Even as the bananas were ready for harvest, a gale, accompanied by a mild drizzle, lashed these areas on Tuesday evening and destroyed the plantations on over 10 acres.

“The gale destroyed over 10,000 ‘nendran’ plants, much to the shock of the farmers. Since the ‘nendran’ variety of banana fetches Rs. 45 per kg in the market, we were hopeful of getting a decent revenue from the harvest. But the unexpected gale has dashed all our hopes. Agriculture Department officials should survey the crop loss and make recommendations to the government for giving compensation to the loss,” said M. Shanmugasundaram, one of the affected farmers from Karunkadu.
