"Spain: "With fair competition, there is fruit for all of us to work"
This year, prospects for the stonefruit campaign are quite good. The cold this winter has allowed the trees to rest, unlike last year, when the bloom was irregular. "The production will be good if the weather stays good, so we expect a great volume," states Elena García, manager of SC Elena Garcia.
This Extremadura-based company, founded by a woman, has been marketing stonefruit for 3 years, although its founder has more than 17 years' experience in the horticultural sector. "This year, if the weather allows it, we, together with our growers, will produce about two million kilos," affirms García. A few years ago, in the first campaign of the company, "we harvested 300,000 kilos, which is not a lot," says García. This volume has been increasing thanks to the results obtained in previous campaigns and the rising number of growers who wish to collaborate with us every year. The most common stonefruit crops they work with are nectarines, peaches and plums.
"Our job is to find the fruit that our customers request, with the quality they are looking for and whenever they need it," says García. To this end, they work exclusively with 5 producers.
