Zambian Ministry of Commerce denies ban on imported fruit & veg

A few weeks ago the Zambian Ministry of Agriculture announced that the government had banned the import of some vegetables (tomatoes, onions, carrots and potatoes) and fruits (mangoes, pineapples, watermelons and lemons).

Contradicting this, the Ministry of Commerce Permanent secretary of Zambia, Kayula Siame says there is no ban on the importation of fruits and vegetables.

Speaking during a joint press briefing with her Ministry of Agriculture counterpart Julius Shawa, Mrs. Siame says there is no statutory instrument that has been issued to support such a move.

She says government is seeking to establish if there is sufficient capacity for local producers to satisfy the needs of the market. Mr. Shawa also stated that there is a need to increase the diversification of crops in the country.
