The distribution of Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports remained largely unchanged in January, with the EU accounting for 94.4% of the total, European non-EU countries for 2.5%, and other geographical areas, including America, Africa, and Asia, for 3% of the total, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes, processed by FEPEX.
In January, Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports to the EU fell by 7% in volume and grew by 17% in value compared to the same month of 2016, totalling 1.1 million tonnes and 1,308 million Euro, respectively. This is a similar performance to that of the total exported, which amounted to 1.2 million tons (-7%) and 1,385 million Euro (+17%).
The EU accounted for 94.4% of the volume exported by Spain in January and for 94.3% of the value, with Germany accounting for 311,828 tonnes (-6%) and 374.1 million Euro (+24%), followed by France, with 205.103 tonnes (-9%) and 273.7 million Euro (+ 11%) and the United Kingdom, with 151,533 tonnes (-10%) and 175.2 million Euro (+0%).
Exports to European non-EU countries fell by 11%, totalling 30,586 tonnes, and were worth 37.3 million Euro (+4%). Two destinations worth noting were Switzerland, with 16,800 tonnes (-5%) worth 22.8 million Euro (+15%), and Norway, with 8,459 tonnes (-275%) worth 10 million Euro (-16%).
Shipments to other geographical areas showed a positive performance, with a 15% growth in volume and 16% in value, amounting to 36,781 tonnes and 40.4 million Euro, although the share of Spanish exports remains very small, with just 3% of the total volume and value of the shipments.
The main destinations within this group are Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil and Saudi Arabia. Exports to Canada were worth 4.2 million Euro (-33%). Those to the United Arab Emirates reached 4.1 million, the same figure as in January 2016. Brazil totalled 2.8 million Euro (-9%) and Saudi Arabia imported products worth 2.5 million Euro (+11%).
