Short chain from Sicily to Berlin

Often, when talking about short chain, people mean local produce. But it can also mean a reduction of the passages from the producer to the consumer. This is what the project by entrepreneur Nicolò Sparacino and business partner Michele Ferraro is for - it focuses on the commercialisation of high-quality Sicilian products in Germany with no intermediate passages.

This is how the 'Terra Verde: Landkost aus Sizilien' shop in the heart of Berlin's Friedenau was born.

"The idea behind this shop is to provide customers with something that is truly unique."

It is in fact the first time Sicilian producers have attempted something like this in Berlin. The shop opened on 21st January 2017 and the feedback has been very positive so far, so much so that other shops are being considered.

"The idea is to give this modern cosmopolitan city a corner of Sicily, where people can enjoy a true Sicilian experience without having to travel too far. Well-trained staff are essential to achieve our goal, because we don't want to just sell a product, we want to tell the history and tradition behind it."

Consumers have the chance to come into direct contact with the product and obtain clear information on its origin. It makes it easier to retain customers, who can see pictures of producers at work and read about each product. This way, they get to know the entire production process.

Ribera D.O.P. oranges pass directly from producers to consumers, just like the rest of the products, which also include organic marmalades.

In the shop, we can find lemons, cedars and many orange varieties including the Vaniglia sub-acid variety. In addition, there are the specialities of the Sicilian tradition - caponata, dried fruit (pistachios from Bronte and almonds from Agrigento), wine as well as lemon and orange juices.

The objective of the shop is to guarantee a short chain as well as the healthiness of the premium quality products, which are sold at an adequate price.

"We know quality must be supported by an adequate price. That's why supplying information and enabling customers to taste the products are fundamental aspects."
