Italy: A good year for potatoes

"The market is going very well, I wish every year could be like this. Consumption is good and everything worked out well - quantities are not excessive, quality is excellent and demand is high," reports Alberto Zambon, President of Consorzio della patata di Bologna Dop.

Sowing is coming to an end. "We still cannot be certain, but it seems Pdo areas will increase. I believe we will go from the 350 hectares of the past year to almost 400 of Primura."

Potatoes from Bologna are usually sold on the domestic market, although something is starting to move abroad too. "We want to be part of the initiatives promoted by the Emilia-Romagna region abroad. There are consumers, abroad too, that would appreciate our Pdo product. Let me give you an example - last year, we saw Primura potatoes sold at €2.60/kg in Munich, while in Italy they usually sell at €1.30. We need to take advantage of these opportunities while we still can."

As regards commercialisation, Zambon says that destocking has reached 80%. "If demand continues like this, we will finish stocks right at the start of the new potato season. Some regions in the south faced problems due to bad weather. As there will be no overlaps, the market should be good."
