Spain: Martorell will be Lidl's largest distribution center in Europe

According to company sources, Lidl continues to bet on the Spanish market and will install a new 65,000 square-meter logistics center in the district of Martorell in Barcelona. To do this, the company acquired a plot of 120,000 square meters in order to accompany the activity's growth in Catalonia and in the rest of the country.

Specifically, the sources said that, since the company couldn't expand the 45,000 square-meter platform that they have in Montcada i Reixach (Barcelona), where the distributor has its Spanish headquarters, they have chosen to accelerate the acquisition of this parcel in Martorell. Apart from this logistics center, the company had already announced their plan to build a similar center in Cheste (Valencia). The company is completing some paperwork to embark on both projects, company sources say.

Lidl has a total of 10 logistics platforms similar to the ones it will open in Martorell (Barcelona) and Cheste (Valencia), that are located in Dos Hermanas (Sevilla), Llodio (Alava), Malaga, Naron (Galicia), Ribaroja del Turia ( Valencia), Lorqui (Murcia), Güimar (Canary Islands), and the populations of Pinto and Alcala de Henares in Madrid, in which they are investing about 70 million euro.

Lidl has been in Spain since 1994, and it currently has more than 535 stores, which employ about 11,500 people and have about 3.5 million customers. To meet the growth of recent years, both in Catalonia and in the rest of Spain, the distributor had planned to open ten new stores in February in different locations, such as Valencia, the Canary Islands, and Andalusia creating 120 new jobs.
