What Italians bought in 2016

Special attention was paid to fresh products, household goods and personal care. Followed by drinks, fresh produce and frozen products/ice-cream, without forgetting something for the pets. According to the Italiani.Coop processing of Nielsen data, this is what Italians bought from domestic retailers last year. 

Fruit and vegetables represented 5.2% of the total exceeding €3 billion. In the fresh produce segment, 64% was made up of vegetables, with a total value of €1.98 billion, while fruit represented 36% of the total with €1.11 billion.



The fresh-cut segment was the most popular as regards vegetable sales with over €723 million, followed by tomatoes (over €277 million), potatoes (over €267 million), dried onions (over €107 million) and carrots (almost €97 million). Sales in the pre-cooked segment reached €49.5 million. Pumpkins, aubergines, radicchio and cucumbers were less popular. 

As regards fruit, strawberries and oranges were the most popular with a total value of over €187 and €175 million respectively. They were followed by lemons (€158.5 million) and apples (€114.3 million). Sales in the fresh-cut and exotic fruit segments reached €21 and €15.6 million respectively.

In addition, in 2016, €58.2 million of clementines were sold as well as €43.1 million of grapes, €42.2 million of kiwis and over €84 million of nectarines, apricots and peaches.
