Juan de Dios Pérez, of Pérez Zara Agrícola:

"We are one of the main Spanish avocado exporters to China"

Spanish avocados are becoming popular in China through the Hong Kong market, where, according to Juan de Dios Pérez, manager of Pérez Zara Agrícola, "we are one of the main Spanish exporters. In China, there is currently a huge interest in having access to new products," he affirms.

"With its great capacity to absorb a wide range of products, the market has become very interesting and could help Spanish avocado producers prevent the saturation of the European market in the future." According to the exporter, Australia and Mexico remain China's main suppliers, although the country is responding well to the first batches of Spanish avocados.

At the moment, avocado prices are on the rise in Europe. "The prices at origin are very high in Spain, oscillating between 2.50 and 3 Euro per kilo, and there is an upward trend, which is making the product very expensive at retail level. Spain has limited volumes given the current context of strong demand in Europe, which also renders the volumes from Peru, Israel or Morocco insufficient. It is something that usually happens at this time of the year," he explains.

Cadiz is working to gradually become a key avocado production area. The fact is that while the province of Malaga mostly has small plantations, Cadiz is setting up large ones that will bear fruit very soon. Nevertheless, Juan de Dios warns that a case similar to the 'construction boom' may be taking place. "After the latest recession, a considerable capital has been invested in agriculture, since in times of crisis it proved to be the only sector that didn't record such big losses," he explains.

The company markets its avocados in Spain and the United Kingdom under the "Ipm Supreme" brand, which enjoys a strong presence in the hospitality sector, and whose reputation is growing in other European markets, such as Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Poland, the Nordic countries and France. "Even in Paris, which is such a difficult market with so much product supply, we have managed to gain a foothold together with our partner Fenes."
