Carrefour Brazil wins Rama Prize for Fresh Produce Sustainability

Brazil’s supermarket association, Abras, has given Carrefour the Rama Prize for sustainability for the second year in a row.

The Rama programme is designed to monitor and control the use of pesticides in fresh produce supply chains in Brazil, and last year 1.24 million tonnes of food produce was tracked through it. Carrefour’s accolade came in the ‘Distinguished Retailer’ category.

Paulo Pianez, head of Carrefour Brazil's sustainability department, said that the French company’s aim is to “be able to completely monitor its whole fruit and vegetable supply chain, so it can guarantee its customers a safe, high-quality selection of foods that help preserve the planet's biodiversity and enhance the well-being of communities."

He added that the chain’s participation in the Rama programme means that it can “bolster our control and traceability procedures with a programme for training our suppliers in best production practices.”
