Maurice Koppen, Oakfield Champignons:

“Smoother sales of mushrooms despite decreased export to UK”

The white mushrooms are enjoying good demand this season. “Especially compared to previous years, demand has been very good from the summer until now,” says Maurice Koppen from Oakfield Champignons of Stramproy, the Netherlands. Oakfield Champignons is a commercial trading company with a production entirely their own, with direct sales to retail and food service, both domestic and abroad. The nursery supplies, among other products, white mushrooms, chestnuts mushrooms, portobello mushrooms, flats, (king) oyster mushrooms and shiitakes, both in a conventional and an organic variant.

“In general, we see demand for fresh mushrooms increasing, and that is naturally positive as regards the future. We currently have a good demand, in part thanks to promotions for white mushrooms by both domestic and international retailers. Prices are at a level between 1.50 and 1.60 euro. The chestnut mushrooms have it more difficult. More was dedicated to that cultivation, and because of larger productions, supply is slightly larger than demand.”

The export of mushrooms to the UK, traditionally a large export market, has become much trickier due to the Brexit and unstable pound, according to the cultivator. “Those volumes are much lower than in the past. Furthermore, we have much competition because Poland sells directly to the British market. On the other hand, we have noticed France is buying more Dutch mushrooms, and export to Germany is also rising, despite increasing German cultivation.”

Maurice is facing the coming weeks full of confidence. “Demand always starts increasing a bit in this period. I do not expect any problems until Easter, but in recent years, sales continued to be good for a number of weeks after Easter. Sales tend to be lower in summer, but that is anticipated in productions more and more now, so that supply and demand are better balanced.”
