Poland: Fruit and vegetable exports increased in 2016
According to Poland's Central Statistical Office, the country's total vegetable production (early and late) in 2016 amounted to approximately 4.5 million tonnes and was about 18% higher than in 2015. This increase was a result of the relatively favourable weather conditions. The most notable increases in the yield were recorded by cucumbers, brassica vegetables and root crops.
As for the fruit harvest, last year's production amounted to approximately 4.1 million tonnes and was about 13% higher than in 2015. Of particular note is the record production of apples, which amounted to approximately 3.6 million tonnes, as well as the increase recorded in the production of berries, which amounted to about 600 thousand tonnes and was approximately 10% higher than in 2015.
From January to November 2016, the volume of Polish fruit exports increased by 9.4%, compared with a decline of 5.3% in the same period of the previous year. An increase was also recorded in the export of vegetables, whose volume increased by 3% compared with a decline of 0.4% in the same period of 2015.
The increase of fruit exports was the result of higher exports to countries outside the EU, despite the lower exports to EU countries. meanwhile, in the case of vegetables, higher exports were achieved in both EU and non-EU countries. In any case, both fruit and vegetable exports remain below the levels reached before the introduction of the Russian embargo in August 2014, according to an analysis of Credit Agricole Bank, Poland SA.
