Italy: Industry tomato price established at €79.75

The price of industry tomatoes in northern Italy has been established at €79.75 a ton despite the fact that the fate of the Ferrara Food and Copador processing companies is yet to be decided. Last year, the price was €82.95/ton, i.e 8% less than 2015.

This means the value of tomatoes has dropped again, even though production costs have not decreased. Luca Artioli, Apo Conerpo manager, commented by saying that "there was little unity, so everyone suffers."

The price was lowered to align it to that of other production areas - €72 in Andalusia, €74 in Portugal and $60 in California.

The quantity was agreed at 1.7 million tons, a little less than 2016. However, the situation is still unknown, regarding the two companies, which are going through a crisis and are worth over 400 thousand tons. For each ton over the 1.7 million threshold, the POs will have to pay a penalty of €20.

The organic segment is a thing unto itself. Cultivated areas are destined to increase also, because prices are much more satisfactory.
