Morocco and France are Spain's largest horticultural suppliers

The Spanish import of fresh fruit and vegetables from Morocco in 2016 was worth 413.3 million Euros; a 23% increase compared to 2015. The North African country is thus strengthening its position as Spain's leading supplier, followed by France, with 315 million Euros (+24%), according to data from the General Directorate of Customs, processed by FEPEX.

The Spanish import of Moroccan fruit and vegetables has grown by 221% over the past 5 years, from 128.7 million Euro in 2012 to 413.3 million Euro in 2016. Morocco accounts for 18% of Spain's total horticultural imports. The purchase of Moroccan vegetables in 2016 stood at 237.6 million Euro; 14% more than in 2015, of which 132 million corresponded to green beans and 32.4 million to tomatoes. The value of fruit imports from Morocco amounted to 176 million Euro; up 36%. The most noteworthy growth was that of red fruits, namely of raspberries, with 60% more and 55 million Euro; blueberries, with 32% more and 34.5 million Euro, and strawberries, with 38% more and 25 million Euro.

After Morocco, Spain's main fruit and vegetable supplier is France, with 315 million Euro (+24%) and 797,275 tonnes (+6%). France accounts for 13.6% of Spain's total imports, with the most representative products being potatoes, with 146 million Euro (62% more than in 2015) and apples, with 57.1 million Euro (+9%). In vegetables, other products worth noting are beans, with 14.1 million Euro (+46%) and lettuce, with 12.5 million Euro (-3%). As for fruits, oranges, with 8.5 million Euro, and bananas, with 8.2 million Euro, also stand out.

Peru is Spain's third largest fruit and vegetable supplier, with 163.4 million Euro, followed by the Netherlands, Argentina, Italy, Portugal and Costa Rica. Worthy o note is the growth in purchases from the Netherlands, with 142 million Euro (+25%) and 199,663 tonnes (+34%). Potatoes, with 31 million Euro (+18%) and tomatoes, with 27 million Euro (+8%) are the main products imported from the Netherlands, also the import of pears, with 10 million Euro, oranges, with 8.7 million Euro or table grapes, with 7.7 million Euro, are also noteworthy.

The Spanish import of fresh fruit and vegetables in 2016 grew by 17% in value compared to the previous year, amounting to 2,313 million Euro, and by 12% in volume, totalling 2.8 million tonnes, according to data from the General Directorate of Customs of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, processed by FEPEX.
