75% of people in the UK not getting their five a day

After a recent study that recommends 10 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, a new Dole commissioned study shows that 75% of British people aren't even eating five a day.

The study, involving 2,000 people, is part of a new initiative called More Fruit Month. It found that three quarters of us fail to manage half of the five a day goal and, on top of that, around 50 per cent admit to having days where they get no fruit or veg at all.

One of the reasons people may not be getting enough is because not everyone can correctly identify what a fruit and vegetable actually is. Nine per cent of those questioned wrongly thought tuna was a fruit, while three per cent were adamant turkey counted as one of their five a day.

For those who did know their fruits and veg, nearly a third didn't think frozen or tinned versions counted towards their daily intake.
