Report shows fruit & veg actually cheaper than junk food

There are many misconceptions about the costs of eating healthy. You may have even heard some say they can't afford to eat healthy. According to a new study, this view may change as a new study published by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) shows that when compared by cost per kg, fruit and vegetables were cheaper than junk food.

The study, titled, "Cheap as Chips: Is a healthy diet affordable?" uses data from Tesco and Asda to compare the prices of 78 common food and drink products.

When measured by edible weight, the cheapest ready-meals, pizzas, burgers and sugary breakfast cereals cost more than £2 per kilogram, whereas typical fruit and vegetables cost less than that.

“A diet of muesli, rice, white meat, fruit and vegetables is much cheaper than a diet of Coco Pops, ready-meals, red meat, sugary drinks and fast food. A wide range of healthy alternatives are available at the same price as the less healthy options.” Christopher Snowden, director of lifestyle economics at the Institute of Economic Affairs said.
