China: Shenzhen customs intercept papaya tree

On February 14th, St. Valentine's day, the Shenzhen Inspection and Quarantine Bureau officers intercepted a passenger carrying a whole papaya plant. It was over a meter in length, with three branches, one with small green papayas on it, and the roots were covered in mud.

According to the passenger, the seedling was planted in Hongkong in preparation for transplantation to the mainland. As the passenger could not provide the relevant inspection and quarantine certificate, according to rules which prohibit pets, animals, plants and other live products, the seedling was destroyed by burning and samples were sent to the laboratory for further quarantine.
