Australian Deputy Prime Minister says he doubled ag biosecurity budget

Federal Agriculture Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce has responded to an ABC Rural report that cuts to biosecurity staff and under-resourcing have increased Australia's risk at a time of more global trade.

Mr Joyce said he doubled the budget for the Department of Agriculture compared to Labor, and added $200 million to biosecurity in the Agriculture White Paper.

"When I got the budget back from the Labor party the agriculture budget had more than halved," Mr Joyce said.

"And it was one of the reasons we had to go through the Agriculture White Paper, and put an extra $200 million into biosecurity.

"I saw it was completely and utterly deficient.

"So I've been reinvesting in biosecurity because the only place the Labor party could find budget savings was biosecurity.
